What Is Parish Social Ministry?
This ministry attempts to actively share in Christ’s love for God’s people. It is an attempt on the part of the parish to respond to the poor-not just the economically poor-but the poor as identified by every kind of hurt, pain, and loneliness.
Assistance may be given in the following ways:
The Interfaith Employment Effort acts as a support to the unemployed and to potential employers. The IEE is non-sectarian and there is no fee. Assistance with job searches, resume preparation, and interviewing techniques are offered. Hours on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11:30am to 1:30pm. It is suggested that individuals call for an appointment. (516 599-7448)
The Ministry of Prayer and Praise unites parishioners at home in ministry to the needs of the local community. All parishioners are invited to join this ministry. Parishioners are welcome to call or send in prayer requests to the Office of Parish Social Ministry so that the members of the ministry can include the intentions in their daily prayers.
The “Meal in a Minute” Program is a meal preparation ministry offered to parishioners on an as needed basis. Volunteer chefs are alway needed.
Holiday Food and Gift Program, supported by parishioners and local organizations, offers assistance during special seasons of the year to eligible families and individuals.
The Martha and Mary Ministry assists seniors who live alone with food pick-up and other needs.
The Handmaiden Ministers make lap robes that are donated to hospitalized veterans and patients in several health care residences.
The Baby Pillow Ministers make ornamental pillows that are given to families on the occasion of their child’s Baptism.
The Prayer Shawl Ministry is open to anyone who would like to reach out to those in need of some TLC. Care and the love of knitting and crocheting have been combined into a prayerful ministry that reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace.
The Hospital Visitation Ministers visit local hospitals in an attempt to bring the care and concern of the parish to those who are ill.
Assisted Living Ministers bring the Eucharist and the love of the Parish Community to those living in Assisted Living Residences.
The Quilting Ministers make quilts that are sent to hospitals and agencies, which care for HIV/Aids and At-Risk babies. Quilting Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 9:30am in the Office of Parish Social Ministry. Supplies and instructions are provided. New members are always welcome! Kate’s Kids, students from Our Lady of Peace, meet during the school day, and participate in this beautiful ministry.
(With Pastoral Staff)
This ministry responds to the needs of people at the time of death and it centers around the rite of Christian burial. Through this ministry, the Christian community walks with the family members and helps them to understand that death does not break the bonds of love, fidelity, and friendship. During the weeks and months following the funeral, volunteers in the Office of Parish Social Ministry continue to offer support to those who are grieving. This is done through calls, letters and booklets sent at certain anniversaries, cards, and Holiday plants.
Public Policy Education Network
The Public Policy Education Network is intended to educate people about the Church’s Public Policy Agenda and engage them in the process of development and advocacy.
The Thrift Shoppe
The Thrift Shoppe Ministry enables PSM to assist the needy of our community. Donations of new and “gently-used” clothing as well as household items are always welcome. Special sales are held during the year. Thrift Shoppe profit is used to support Parish Social Ministry and other parish programs.
Ministry to the Veterans
Collections of clothing, toiletries, and other items are sent to hospitalized Veterans on a regular basis. Parish Social Ministry also supports the STANDDOWNS which are held for homeless veterans during the year.
Parish Social Ministry sponsors a Mothers’ Day Baby Shower each May. Collections for the Mary Brennan Inn, Project Renewal (a ministry to the homeless), the Mercy Medical Mission and the “Souper” Bowl of Caring are held at specified times during the year.
We are very grateful for your generous response to the Thanksgiving Food Drive!!!
