Religious Education

The Religious Education staff here at Our Lady of Peace is dedicated to assisting parents in their sacred calling to raise their children in love of God and of others.  We feel blessed to welcome each child and to guide his/her journey of faith in the Lord and in the church.

ALL VOLUNTEERS:  The Diocese of Rockville Centre now requires that every parish volunteer and employee take a VIRTUS training session that provides information to help prevent child abuse.  Please go to www.virtus.org to register for a training session.  In addition to this training, several forms need to be completed.

Grade 1 through 8

All grade levels make prayer a priority each week.

All classes begin in church so that we may put ourselves in the presence of God.  Catechists then bring students into the classrooms where they lead the students in different types of prayer.  In addition to formal prayer, meditation may be incorporated.  Teachers read a gospel story and then lead students into quietly immersing themselves in the gospel scene.  Role playing can be used to help students understand their faith by acting out certain religious events.

Each grade level focuses on a particular theme:

Grade 1:

We learn that God made our beautiful world.  God made each of us.  Everything God made is good!

Grade 2:

We learn that Jesus forgives us when we are sorry.  In the sacrament of Reconciliation, we receive forgiveness and grace.  We will receive Jesus’ Body and Blood when we receive Communion.

Grade 3:

We learn that we are the Church.  We belong to Jesus.  We grow closer to Jesus if we follow him.

Grade 4:

We learn that God gave us ten commandments to keep us safe and close to Him.  Jesus gave us the Great Commandment and the beatitudes.

Grade 5:

We learn that the seven sacraments are signs that bring us closer to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Grade 6:

We learn about our religious ancestors and their journeys as they looked forward to the coming of the Messiah.  We study this in the Hebrew scriptures, or the Old Testament.

Grades 7 & 8:

In this part of the religious education program, students are instructed by a confirmation coordinator.  They learn the meaning of discipleship and prepare to receive the sacraments of confirmation.  Through this sacrament they become full and complete Christians.
