Eighty-five years of faith in Lynbrook
From a single Norman-style church built on the old Nieman Estate to a full parish family with a school, religious education program, and dozens of active ministries.
25 Fowler Avenue, Lynbrook, NY
Our History
Our parish began in the spring of 1940, when Fr. James J. Ayers was sent to build and lead a new Catholic church for the Incorporated Village of Lynbrook. Built on the former Judge Nieman Estate in the Norman architectural style, the church seats 740 and was dedicated on July 4, 1943.
Our Lady of Peace School opened in 1957. Through the Second Vatican Council the parish embraced the Mass in English and welcomed generations of parishioners into lay ministry.
Today the parish is led by Rev. Steven McClernon, and on October 5, 2026 Our Lady of Peace celebrates its 85th Anniversary.
If you want peace, work for justice. If you want serenity and tranquility in God, order your relationships rightly for the sake of the common good.
In the early 17th century, the Dukes of Joyeuse held in veneration a small statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary entitled Our Lady of Peace, later placed in a Capuchin monastery in Paris in 1630. In her right hand she holds an olive branch of peace; on her left arm, her Son — who gazes past his own cross toward his mother’s branch of peace.
